Developing a visual language for a network exploring the future of public health.

In partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Building H, IDEO has been exploring ways in which to leverage the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic as a critical moment of opportunity to catalyze systemic change in health. In the form of a series of remote workshops, we brought together leaders from across sectors, asking the question: “What if businesses measured success based on the impact they make on people and society’s health and well-being rather than sales or shareholder profit?”

The Solution

The “First Mile Health” initiative centers on proactively designing health into all touchpoints of everyday life, creating the conditions for everyone to thrive, and enhancing experiences that nurture health
in the first place. Apart from facilitating three workshops, we published a series of illustrated articles—interviews with thought-leaders around the impact of various aspects of life on public health, such as nature, food, and wealth.

My Role

My role on the project was two-fold. I supported with workshop design and facilitation and took part in thought-leader interview sessions. In a visual design capacity, I designed the visual language and spot illustrations for First Mile Health, partnered with an Interaction Designer in developing the website, and designed printed materials and tools. After creating a hero illustration for the first “Nature and Health” article, I developed an illustration brief for future illustrators to use for upcoming pieces (as seen in samples below).
