Designing a tool that helps patients pick the HIV treatment that’s right for them.

Gilead Sciences is an industry leader in the development of HIV medication—and had heard about a competitor working on a new breakthrough injectable therapy. In context of this new launch, the Gilead team approached IDEO with the challenge of developing a stronger communication strategy for their most popular treatment. Knowing the widening list of existing options, how might we help patients and physicians make well-informed medication decisions? And how might those decisions be unbiased, and based on clinical, practical, emotional, and social merits?

The Solution

The IDEO team’s north-star goal was to develop a communication tool that is comprehensive, unbiased, and truly aids patients and their doctors in making confident decisions that are best for them. The result was an interactive in-clinic tablet displaying the most popular treatments across all competitor brands, that not only communicates drug features and benefits, but also serves as an educational tool physicians use to help their patients set realistic, personalized treatment goals.

My Role

As the lead Communication Designer, I was deeply involved in every step of the design process. From leading research interviews with patients and physicians, to partnering with our Industrial Designer in designing and building physical tool prototypes, leading testing workshops with patients, to developing the visual system and information design for the tool and accompanying educational material. I co-wrote our patient journey and art directed accompanying illustrations. Illustrations were executed by the incredible Monica Gardwood.
